We test our herd for Ovine Progressive Pneumonia (OPP), Johne's Disease, and
Caseous Lymphadenitis (CL). These are debilitating diseases, and we are proud to say that we have never had a positive test and are happy to provide testing results to potential screened buyers. Our herd is also registered with the Scrapies prevention program, and all of our lambs are sold with their Scrapies tags. Sheep who were brought in from outside our herd are from tested herds only, and were quarantined for 30 days before being allowed into the herd. This is in order to preserve the biosecurity of our flock and to prevent any diseases from entering our flock. We have strict biosecurity protocols in place including boot covers, gloves and foot bathes.
When searching for a sheep breed to raise, we had one goal in mind: temperament. We wanted sheep who did not fit the profile of stereotypical sheep. We wanted ewes who would greet us at the fence, who enjoy attention, and who would let us handle them easily and with no fear. And we found that in the Finns. Now temperament is one of our strictest standards that we hold for our herd. We work with lambs every single day, sitting with them and allowing them to become comfortable in our presence, so that when they grow up they will be glad to come right up to you. Once they get comfortable our girls are gentle, sweet, and easy to handle, and we try to make sure that all lambs leaving our farm are the same.
One of the traits that we select for in our Finns is genetics for multiples. Finnsheep are known for having many lambs. They are one of the most prolific breed of sheep, and were first introduced to the United States in order to increase the lambing percentage of commercial ewe flocks. Finn-Dorset crosses were very popular not too long ago, and you will find Finn genetics in many commercial flocks to this day. Because we are dedicated to upholding the Finnsheep breed standard, we choose to select for ewes who lamb - and successfully raise with no supplementation - triplets at a minimum. We do expect our mature ewes to lamb and raise quads, and we plan to only retain lambs from ewes who have these genetics.
Finnsheep are known as a "maternal" sheep breed. Maternal breeds tend to have high fertility, high milk production, longevity, and good mothering ability. They are primarily used to breed replacement ewe lambs for the herd, rather than terminal sires or ram lambs. As such, we began with Finns expecting them to be great mothers, and time and time again they prove themselves to be over and above our expectations. I am always amazed each lambing season, despite how many times we have done it, how patient, nurturing, attentive, and devoted our ewes are to their lambs. No matter if they are a first time mom with twins or an experiences mom with quints, they are always so adoring of their lambs, completely and utterly devoted to their babies. I am always in awe of the ewes who stand for hours while they clumsy newborns stumbled around under them while searching for their milk, and I watch over and over again as our ewes stay awake the entire night the first couple of days, urging their lambs to nurse as frequently as every 15 minutes. And not only do they care for newborns, but they are devoted to their lambs forever. Our yearlings run right to their mothers when they are finally old enough to join the adult herd, and they bond with her as if they haven't just spent months apart. Our ewes would nurse their lambs for as long as their body allowed them to, if we let them, even when their lambs are bigger than they are! In short, we take mothering ability very seriously here, and we do not have any ewes here who do not love their lambs with their entire being.
We raise a herd of dairy sheep. Our main priority for our herd is milk production and quality, and we use this milk to make many dairy products for our family, including cheese. We handcraft high quality soap from our rich, creamy milk and offer our soap for sale at Farmer's markets, speciality stores as well as shipped to you. Contact the administrator for current seasonal offerings. To attain that beautiful milk our sheep are all grass-fed on high quality clover and alfalfa year round. They are fed only natural nutritional supplements and no medications, making their milk pure and all-natural. Sheep's milk is incredible: it is highly nutritious, easily digestable, creamy, smooth, and with higher protein content than cow's milk. Currently for our family we make cheese including feta and chevre. Feta is traditionally made from sheep's milk, so we are excited about going back to the roots of this historical cheese to create a bright, salty feta preserved in extra-virgin olive oil that all cheese-lovers could appreciate. Our sheep's milk chevre is a take on the traditional goat's milk chevre: a rich, creamy cheese that is spreadable on crackers and perfect for a picnic. None of our cheese is for sale at this time. Our hand-crafted soap is soothing and smooth, perfect for dry, cracked hands or sensitive skin. For retail or wholesale soap sales, other than pick up at farmer's markets, we will ship samples upon request to serious inquiries. We do not offer farm pick up and buyers pay shipping. Our soap is often available at natural stores.
Fleece quality is a critically important aspect of our herd. We originally selected our started flock based on fleece quality, and we continue to select retained ewe lambs based on fleece quality, among many other things. We mainly select for fine, soft fleeces with tight crimps. We look for sheep with fast growing fleeces that can reach long staples lengths while still being shorn twice a year. Our lamb fleeces are all "next-to-skin" soft and are perfect for sweaters or projects that require fine fleeces. Our fleeces all have beautiful luster and glimmer under the sun. They are easy to wash, with very minimal VM. While we do not coat our sheep, we do keep their bedding area very clean so that minimal vegetable matter ends up in the fleece. We have fleeces available in many patterns and colors, including brown, white, silver, true black, and brown and black badger. Every year we have lamb fleeces available in limited quantities. We only offer fleeces with 3" minimum staple length. Fleeces are priced per lb, buyer pays shipping. No farm pick up.
Along with producing milk and fleece, the main goal for our herd is to raise registered breeding stock that then move on to other farming operations or stay with us to further our breeding plans. Because we breed our Finns towards the breed standard, we aim to provide registered ewes and rams who will help other herds grow. Our objective is to raise purebred stock who conform tightly to the breed standard and whose lineage is wide and varied, so that we can provide other herds with sheep who fit in well with their own flock, both genetically and conformational. We are always excited when someone uses our sheep to create dynamic crosses with other breeds, such as the classic Finn-Shetland cross. Please note: no farm pick up is available, please contact the administrator to make arrangements for delivery.

Although our sheep are not coated, we take great care in skirting so that there is minimal VM in your fleece. Absolutely no tags will be found, and belly wool is separated
We always have a variety of colors and patterns available. We pride ourselves on having a wide variety of colors in our flock, so we will always have what you're looking for. Deep black, silver, brown, spotted, white, we have it all!
Our lamb fleeces are gorgeous, super soft, very fine, and full of luster. And even our adult ewes have fleece that is "next-to-skin" soft. Looking for something for your next sweater? Send us a message!
All our fleeces are raw, skirted but unwashed. Perfect for your project! Our lighter fleeces dye very well, and our darker fleeces produce a deep, rich color with any alteration.
In order for us to sell our ewe lambs registered under our herd name, they must conform to strict standards of breed conformation, temperament, fleece quality, and physically correct conformation. Our ewe lambs all come from excellent genetics and from dams who are highly prolific - therefore, we only sell future breeding lambs if we are certain they will be able to comfortably carry their pregnancy to full term, with no issues. We also select for ewe lambs who are fast growing. Although we do not breed ewe lambs to lamb at 12 months, we recognize that some farms do, so we will not sell a ewe lamb unless we are confident she will reach breeding weight by 9 months of age. Our ewe lambs are also evaluated based on fleece quality: we expect our lambs to have fine, soft fleeces. Whether you're looking for an open crimp or a tightly crimped fleece, we'll have what you're looking for. We have genetics for milk, fleece, and meat - send us a message!
Please note no farm pick up is available.
Our ram lambs go through an even stricter evaluation process than our ewes. In general, we only sell the top 10-15% of our ram lambs as registered breeding lambs. Ram lambs must conform to breed standard, and must also have good physical conformation. They must have strong legs, a smooth topline, good length of loin, and strong shoulders in order for us to consider keeping them intact as future breeding rams. All our current herdsires were able to successfully breed large groups of ewes as ram lambs (6-7 months old), and so we require that our ram lambs gain enough size to breed full size ewes by this age as well. Any ram you get from us will be a strong, big-framed ram who you can depend on for your herd. The most important trait that we demand in our rams is temperament: we want rams who are friendly but respectful of people. We do not tolerate any ram who is aggressive. Looking for a ram to add color or strength to your herd? Send us a message! Please note no farm pick is available.
Any ram lambs who do not meet our criteria for registered breeding lambs will be castrated in a painless, safe manner between 10-12 weeks old. Our wethers are extremely sweet, love people, and enjoy getting scratched and receiving plenty of attention. Our wethers also have beautiful, soft fleece in a variety of different colors and patterns. These boys make excellent fiber pets for handspinners who want to work with their own fleece. These boys also make excellent pasture pets, they are amazingly friendly with very little upkeep, and are great for you children or families just looking for some sheep friends. Our wethers are between $50-$100 depending on how many are purchased. Looking to add a sheep to your home? Consider a sweet wether!
Please note no farm pick up is available.
While we can't promise, we do often have a few adult ewes for sale each year. As we continue to progress and develop our herd by keeping back ewe lambs, we do find the need to part with some of our adult ewes who do not perfectly represent our ideal herd. Our adult breeding ewes are priced at $400-$500 depending on age, pedigree, and lambing history.
Please note no farm pick up is available.
While we do not generally have adult rams for sale, occasionally we may be parting with one of our herdsires. If you are really looking for an adult ram, send us a message!
Please note no farm pick up is available
We are open to selling bottle baby lambs to those who have previous experience raising bottle babies. We traditionally rehome bottle-lambs between 4-6 weeks of age. Any bottle baby ram lambs will be sold on a castration contract detailing that they must be castrated when they reach 10-12 weeks. We do not believe that bottle raised rams should be kept intact, as they can grow aggressive towards people as they age. Please note no farm pick up is available.
Every spring we have registered ewe and ram lambs for sale. These lambs are handled daily so they develop loving temperaments and form a close bond with people. HedgeHog Hill Farm lambs sold as future breeding stock are hand-chosen and evaluated based on a high standard of conformation to breed character that our lambs must match. We do not offer any lambs for sale that we would not keep for our own herd. In past years, we have only sold the top 50% of our ewe lamb flock and the top 10% of our ram lamb flock as registered breeding Finns. We are very proud of our lambs and take great care that they accurately represent our farm name. Are you interested in Finnsheep? Looking for a starter herd or for some new additions?
